Dreams have no expiry dates!
“I have a dream,” proclaimed Martin Luther King in his famous Freedom speech at the Lincoln Memorial, Washington, on 28 August 1963 before a mammoth crowd of 250,000 people. His speech became the landmark statement of the civil rights movement in America, which led to some profound reforms in jobs and equal rights in the country. King, however, did not live to see the full extent of his “dream” come true as he was assassinated five years later in 1968. But it did inspire one man to dream, and 45 years later, he became the first black president of America: Barack Obama.
A dream like the one above is one spoken with conviction. In that dream, there is purpose, hope and belief that, one day, it will become a reality. And it will, when the dreamer sees it taking shape in his life journey. For there are different paths to cross, experiences to go through, lessons to learn, mistakes to avoid, knowledge and skills to acquire and relationships to foster. A dream is a measure of one man’s passion to achieve his innermost desires. It may take years to bear fruit, but the harvest will be sweet and plentiful.
It’s alright to dream. As a schoolboy, I would often hear my teacher screaming at me, “Ooi, stop dreaming!” Come to think about it our education system could do with a session on dreams. I mean dreams about one’s future in mind. Dreams that build, nurture and motivate, not those so-called moral lessons that divide and separate tender minds. School kids must be fed dreams that inspire them to be what they desire in later life. In those days, our dear parents did the dreaming for us to be a doctor, a lawyer or an engineer. Anything else would be a dirty dream. Anyway, who wants a dreamer in the family?
You are what you dream. They say it’s never too late to learn. But I say it’s never too late to dream your future. We all have dreams some, like me, daily, mostly fairy tales! I am talking about Martin Luther King dreamscapes, the type with drive, with power and with magic to transform you into doers and achievers, industry captains, scientists, future leaders and daring individuals with mindsets to build rockets, spaceships and set up colonies in distant planets, among other possibilities. Forget about the expiry dates, it’s for the non-dreamers!
Dream your career. The one and only Walt Disney, the man who innovated animated feature films, once said, “All our dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them.” There is magic in our dreams. Disney’s dream was to create images of animals, people and things into moving objects on the screen: talking, laughing, singing, dancing and doing just about everything that real actors do. Who can forget classics like Pinocchio, Cinderella or Snow White? He also had another long-held dream – to build a theme park, which he accomplished on 17 July 1955. Disneyland is today the dream of many to visit and holiday. Mine too. Guess, I have to start dreaming right away!
